Introductions

It’s August 1st and World Building Month has started. Before I get started on my project and pump out material (let’s be optimistic and hope that I will), I figured some sort of introduction may be in order for any stray worldbuilder that may happen upon this blog.

My name’s Nils, and I am a 34-years old human male world-builder. Not professionally so, I am afraid – by day I am a Customer Support Engineer at Cisco’s IronPort subsidiary. My job is to help other people eliminate spam. It’s a great job, a great company, with great people, but like the other tech jobs I held before it’s not a very creative one.

World building is my outlet for that. I got to world building from the RPG angle, and built my first world, a traditional fantasy setting with happy elves and angry orcs, in 1992. Enderra, as it was called, serves as a namesake for this website. Worldbuilding has sort of mutated into a stand-alone hobby. I love weird settings… as I am sure you’ll find out eventually.

Besides world-building I love to travel, I am very interested in computer games (especially the design of MMORPG’s – I have no illusions that I will ever build one, but the technology is quite fascinating), talking to my globally distributed friends, writing, reading, … and maybe some day I will even draw again.

  1. Good to meet you, Nils. My question is basic: what do you do w/ your worlds once you build them? Do you write about them? Create series around them? Do they sit on a shelf? Do you build clay models of them?

  2. Hi Alex, nice to meet you too – thanks for dropping by. Actually, they just sit on a shelf (the modern equivalent being my hard drive) awaiting the day that I do something useful with them. Most are incomplete (can a world ever really be complete?). In the past, I used them for role-playing games, but I've moved to two different cities in the past seven years and combined with the usual problem of growing older and busier that ended my role-playing days.

I do try myself at writing, and I am not ready yet to accept defeat like I did with role-playing, but don't expect me to ever publish a novel. 😉

  3. Hi, Nils~

Just popping in to say hello and that I am looking forward to Worldbuilding Month as well as catching up on your blog.

    Blessings,
    Kaya aka Wintermaide
