Frontier Transport, Version 2 WIP 1

I spent way oto much time on this. Desining spaceships is hard work. Maybe once I get a bit more practice…

I like this new version quite a bit more than the old one. However, I am well aware of some problems with the design:

  • Need to work out bow design
  • Ship is veritcally unsymetrical – this moves center of mass “up” and will probably look shabby in 3D
  • 96 TEU cargo plan would mean that anybody who wants to pass through the cargo bay has to go through the passenger/crew level. Not a big issue, but seems inefficient.
  • How/where does the landing gear retract?

There will be more problems once I work on this again, I am sure… But well, anyway, I thought I’d share and see what you guys think.

Small Frontier Transport Spaceship

Over the past week, I’ve been playing around with a first space ship design for Somnium, a small frontier cargo/passenger transport. This is what I have so far:

Frontier Transport Spaceship
Frontier Transport Spaceship

I am sort-of happy with the design; I just wish I had better drawing skill – or better yet, knew how to use Blender so I could take this to 3D modelling.

The black boxes in the design are TEU, twenty-foot equivalent units – or in other words, the standard, ubiquitous shipping containers we all know and love. It can carry 44 of those, plus a number of passengers (probably around 20).

This is really small by ocean-shipping lines, but I always wanted the economy of the Somnium interstellar trade to be more in line with aviation than with maritime trade.

The ship is about as long as an A380 and about twice as wide as the A380 fuselage. It can carry about 1000 metric tons of cargo or about 1700 cubic meters – probably a bit more, this is based on simple multiplication for the shipping containers.

For comparison; while there is no cargo variant of the A380, a 747-400F has a maximum payload of 112 metric tons. A 747-8F has a payload of 140 metric tons.

Ride a Comet with Pan Colonial

Another faux “vintage travel poster”:

I had originally wanted to draw this back in October, but I didn’t manage to draw a decent comet. I am fairly happy with this one, although I realize that it’s not “perfect”.

Other works in this “series”:

Four Additional Insignia/Symbols for SF Setting

Here are a few more designs for national emblems:

You are a serious geek if you know where I got the design for “A” from. “B” is a petroglyph of an eagle. “C” is Sleipnir, and “D” is a snowflake.

I am not sure which ones of these I will use; but probably C and D. At any rate I now have enough to cover the major nations of the setting.

Five More Insignia/Symbols for SF Setting

I am fairly happy with these; most of the work was done by the fine folks at – I just assembled them:

I will probably use the pegasus, fist, and olive wreath will symbols for some of my minor nations, and I think the other two are good enough to find their into the setting as well…
