Lego Design #7: Space Freighter

I love playing with the Lego Digital Designer.

This time, I’ve built a small, stereotypical short-distance freighter, a cargo hauler that’s moving standard freight containers about. The base design is probably very common to various Sci Fi settings.

Again, for scale, I’ve included the Space Shuttle.

There are a few things I’d like to improve; I really wanted to make the containers “three sided” – that is, have the ship carry containers on three sides, not four. And the way I set up the containers is not very symetric around the center axis – this should be fixed somehow.

Lego Design #3: Tiny Beach

Third (and, I promise, for now final) Lego design: A tiny beach scene. This is as small as you can go with Lego bricks and still set up some meaningful scenery. This is a popular beach at the blue ocean. The surf’s perfect today – waves crashing on the yellow sand of the beach. There’s a road connecting a lighthouse, two hotel highrises – complete with swimming pool – and a vacation home. The inland is covered in lush vegetation.

LEGO Space Ship Design #1

I always wanted to use LEGO Bricks to design space ships and mecha for my worlds. I don’t have enough bricks to do that, but luckily these days Lego actually offers a free Lego model designer. It looks like you can even order boxes of your custom sets!

Anyway, I haven’t played with Legos in decades, and I never used the designer software before, so my first design is a little clumsy. Still, I think it came out quite well.

To assign this ship a scale – it would be a small transport, perhaps used by corporations, governments, and adventurers’ groups to bring a small team to where ever the action is. It wouldn’t be much bigger than, say, a 727 or so.

The Lego designer estimates the price of this model at 18 Euro. I’ll definitely order a custom Lego set sooner or later, I just want to do so with a better design than this…
